Victoria Dam, surroundings to be made tourist attractions

The Victoria Dam in Kandy and the surrounding area is to be developed as a major tourist attraction according to a proposal by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Victoria Dam, which is considered to be the tallest dam in the country, was built under the accelerated Mahaweli development project.

The dam named after Queen Victoria was opened in 1985 by President J.R. Jayewardene and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Under the new development perogramme a statue of Queen Victoria too is to be installed near the dam.

Work of this development project is underway and Central Province Governor Lalith Gamage visted the area to inspect its progress yesterday (4).

The Governor said that further development of this place as a place of attraction for local and foreign tourists will open new income avenues for locals.
