Water charges will be reduced if electricity charges are slashed – Minister
Water Supply and Drainage Minister Jeevan Thondaman said that if the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) reduces electricity charges from next month, he will reduce water charges as well.
He said Power Minister Kanchana Wijesekera had assured that electricity charges will be reduced next month and he said it will be possible to reduce water charges in comparison to the percentage reduced.
Minister Thondaman announced this during a media briefing held in Kandy. He emphasized further that a formula to calculate the money spent on producing drinking water and distributing it is in operation and that water charges are determined, based on that.
He also said that a considerable cost for electricity has to be borne by the Water Supply Board for this.
“While, electricity charges were increased by 66% in January in 2019, the Minister said that it was pointed out that the water charges for February should be increased. He stated further that, on every occasion when electricity charges are increased the Water Board had to bear an additional cost.The Minister said that when electricity charges are reduced by a considerable amount, it is possible to reduced water charges while providing the consumer with that advantage, based on the formula.
