Liposuction removes over 13 litres of fat in single surgery

Doctors at a private hospital in Kandy have removed 13.5 litres of fat from the abdomen of a 61-year-old woman through liposuction, which could go down in history as the largest volume of fat removed from the human body during a single surgery.

The surgery had been done by a group of doctors headed by Dr. Ananda Jayawardena.

Dr. Jayawardena said the surgery took about three hours although a normal liposuction takes only about two hours.

He said that usually the maximum fat removed during a single surgery is about four to five litres.

The doctor said that the 61-year-old woman, a retired teacher who underwent surgery, is a mother of one and is doing well without any complications.

She had been living a stressful life due to medical conditions such as high blood pressure, back pain, and difficulty in walking. Three months before this, she had undergone bariatric surgery to reduce weight.

Dr. Jayawardena said he decided to perform the liposuction to remove the fat from the abdominal cavity due to the fact that the abdomen was protruding further and had become enlarged even though weight had reduced in other parts of the body after the bariatric surgery.
