Rs. 30 Bn for Greater Kandy Urban Development plan

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana on Saturday inaugurated the Kandy Multi-modal Transport project to be constructed at a cost of Rs.30 billion.

The project is supported by the World Bank.

The Minister said the construction work of the project will be completed in two years.

He also said that the President has given money to operate many related roads under the Greater Kandy Urban Development plan.  This development project, which is implemented according to a joint plan submitted by Peradeniya and Moratuwa Universities and when completed is expected to lessen traffic congestion and improve the facilities and outlook of the Kandy city. It is expected to be completed in the year 2026. A multi-modal transport terminal connecting Kandy Goodshed Old Bus Yard and Kandy Railway Station is to be constructed. After the implementation of the project, the public transport services which are currently located at several places in the city will be brought under one roof.

The aim is to provide efficient and comfortable transport facilities to around 330,000 passengers daily from Kandy covering 193 destinations.

A terminal with ninety-four bus stops, thirteen waiting stops, emergency stop operations, administrative units, restrooms, operational complexes, automobiles, three-wheeler parking lots and many other sections will be constructed under the project. Under the project tunnels will be constructed from the Bogambara roundabout to White House building on Dalada Veediya to lessen traffic. The Road Development Authority has planned to develop 12 road systems in parallel with the construction of the Kandy Multi-modal Transport Centre.

Construction of the pedestrian lane on Peradeniya Old Road near Kandy Girls’ High School, expansion of Sambodhi Mawatha to two lanes and laying of carpets are also to be done. Development projects including the development of Bogambara Lake Circular Road, the widening of Suduhumpola Road to two lanes and the carpeting of the road from the railway station to the clock tower will also be implemented. Investment Promotion State Minister Dilum Amunugama, Central Province Governor Lalith Gamage, World Bank South Asia Regional Training Manager Fei Deng, Ranjith Rubasinghe,Transport, Highways and Mass Media Ministry Secretary were also present.
