A probe has been launched to identify those posting extremely offensive comments on social media pertaining to the recent death of former Water Supply State Minister Sanath Nishantha.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said on Thursday (25), that the probe had revealed that people connected to one particular political party were behind the offensive comments and it was not the voice of the people of the country which he highly doubts that people in a majority Buddhist nation and those of any other religious faith would do at the death of a person to rejoice and post offensive hate filled comments on social media.
The minister told reporters that the individuals were found posting such offensive comments on a regular basis and under fake accounts targeting the late State Minister Sanath Nishantha aimed at character assassinating him using derogatory remarks and comments from the time he met with the accident and succumbed to his fatal injuries.
Minister Amaraweera said that it is shocking to observe how people can rejoice at the death of an individual and said that due to the advance in technology, unlike in the past, nowadays the online social media used in violation of social ethics can be monitored and offenders can be identified which is a great relief.
Minister Amaraweera said that this incident, along with other instances such as violations against children and women, shows that social media needs to be regulated to some extent. He said that many innocent children’s lives are being destroyed regularly, lots of women have committed suicide due to irresponsible and abusive ways that social media is used to target people in defamatory ways, insulting and using hate speech on individuals without any basis that requires to be brought under control.
Speaking to the media at the residence of the late State Minister Sanath Nishantha’s home after paying his last respects, Minister Amaraweera said that the people in Puttalam District, the seat of late State Minister Sanath Nishantha will face a massive crisis after losing their MP who has done yeoman service for the people in the Puttalam District from the time he began representing the seat.
He said that late Sanath Nishantha was someone who was always with the people and was a popular people-friendly politician.
Minister Amaraweera further said that the death of State Minister Nishantha is a huge loss to the Government and the void created by his demise cannot be replaced or filled by any other.
