Shenuk Samararatne and Nethmi Ratnayake emerged as the men’s singles and women’s singles championS at the Uva Province All-Island Open Badminton Tournament held at St Thomas College Badminton courts at Bandarawela .The tournament was successfully organized by the Uva Province Badminton Association under the auspices of the Sri Lanka Badminton.
Shenuk Samararatne from St Sebastians Moratuwa won the major title by defeating Malitha Suriyarachchi in two straight sets 21-17 and 21-13 after a superb display in both sets
In addition to the open singles title, Shenuk Samararatne also clinched the Under19 Boys title, while Minusha Bandara won the Under 19 Girls Championship.
Meanwhile Nethmi Ratnayake showed her prowess by clinching the Open Women’s Singles title when she triumphed in the final against Tarushi Navodya in straight sets 21-9 and 21-7.
In the open men’s doubles category, Dinura Priyashantha and Siath Senaratne secured victory by defeating Hansa De Silva and Yohan Weerasuriya by 21-14 and 21-14. Meanwhile, Isuri Attanayake and Situmi Minara de Silva claimed the open women’s doubles title by defeating Chamya Nandasiri and Yasmitha Sithumini 21-13, 21-12.
The open mixed doubles title was won by Thenuka Sathsara de Silva and Samidi Onel, who triumphed over Hansa de Silva and Chamya Nandasiri by 21-12 and 21-10.
The Uva Province All-Island Open Badminton Championship was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Mcfoil, Mobil, 3M, GAC, and Li-Ning while Sri Lanka BadmintonPresident Rohan de Silva was the chief guest and gave away the main awards .
