Higher Education State Minister Suren Raghavan said that 43,101 students are eligible for obtaining admission to undergraduate courses at 17 State universities this year.

He was addressing the media yesterday at the Government Information Department.

The Sate Minister added that of the 263,000 students who faced the Advanced Level Examination 22/23, 166,000 students have passed, amounting to 62 percent. Of those students who passed, 84,000 have applied for university admission for 2023/2024.

Of these applicants, only 43,101 will be absorbed to follow 985 undergraduate courses at 17 State universities.

He added the undergraduate courses at universities need streamlining considering the demand available in the global and local job markets. Restructuring of these courses is necessary since of those 985 undergraduate courses, 384 belong only to the Arts, Performing Arts and Humanities streams.

The State Minister speaking further on the university structure said that the present university structure based on the Oxford model available in the country is no more suitable to satisfy the present demand in the higher education sector. Hence it should be introduced more effectively and a suitable university structure should be established.

While speaking on ragging in universities, he said that students found guilty of ragging will be subjected to 12 years’ imprisonment.

“There should be education, social and cultural freedom in the university system, but no room will be left for ragging,” he said.

While speaking on inviting guest lecturers to universities, he said that the decision on who is invited should be taken not by the students, but by the academic councils of the particular university.
