The Government of China has agreed to provide funds to implement a religious tourism project in Sri Lanka, a Ministry Spokesman said.
Religious tourism represents a broader segment of the global tourism market and Sri Lanka has a great potential for that with the growing significance for it. Equally, China is an emerging tourism market in Sri Lanka and Buddhism takes a significant place among the Chinese.
Promoting religious tourism generates direct, indirect, and induced opportunities for the country, as well as aids in the development of infrastructure facilities, the modification of lifestyles and the preservation of all Sri Lankan religious sites, heritage sites, the natural environment, and culture.
A delegation representing China’s Wuhan, Fujian, Xiamen and Anhui Provinces recently visited the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs and during a discussion with the Subject Minister Vidura Wickremanayake, the matters related to the promotion of cultural exchange programmes and investment opportunities between China and Sri Lanka were discussed.
The Chinese delegation also proposed establishing a Chinese cultural centre in Sri Lanka.
