A diplomatic dispute between India and the Maldives in January 2024 triggered a notable shift in Indian tourists’ travel preferences, leading to Sri Lanka surpassing the Maldives in tourist arrivals for the month of January.  The repercussions of the diplomatic tension were distinctly felt, with Sri Lanka experiencing a substantial surge in tourist arrivals.

The number of Indian tourists to Sri Lanka more than doubled from 13,759 in January of the preceding year to an impressive 34,399 in January 2024. Several factors contributed to the remarkable surge of Indian tourists opting for Sri Lanka as their preferred destination. The diplomatic discord prompted Indian travelers to explore alternative locales, and Sri Lanka emerged as a compelling choice due to its diverse attractions.

The country boasts stunning beaches, a rich cultural heritage, and picturesque landscapes, providing a perfect blend of leisure and exploration. Furthermore, Sri Lanka’s geographical proximity to India, coupled with improved connectivity through direct flights, facilitated the increased influx of Indian tourists. The hospitality sector in Sri Lanka played an active role in promoting the country as a tourist-friendly destination, offering tailored packages and experiences.

In January, India emerged as the leading source of tourists for Sri Lanka, whereas its position in the Maldives experienced a notable decline, slipping to the fifth position. The top source countries for tourists visiting the Maldives in January were Russia, Italy, China, and the UK. (www.idrw.org)
