Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana yesterday said that an amount of 900 million rupees has been allocated in this year’s budget for the completion of the currently stalled construction of the Nawala-Angampitiya Bridge. It is being constructed through the Nawala-Rajagiriya canal, connecting the Battaramulla Pitakotte road and the Nawala-Rajagiriya canal.

Accordingly, a group of officials including the Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana engaged in an observation of the construction of the bridge.

The bridge is 700 metres long and 10.4 metres wide. The estimated total cost of its construction is Rs. 2,600 million. This project is being implemented by the Road Development Authority (RDA), under the Ministry of Transport and Highways. The State Development and Design Corporation is in charge of the construction of this project. Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana speaking after observing the construction work said that according to a plan prepared by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, as a solution to the heavy traffic in the Kotte area, the construction of this bridge was started as a bridge built on pillars in an environmentally sensitive area in an environment friendly manner. Due to the Covid epidemic and the economic crisis that the country faced during this period, this construction on which already 170 million rupees had been spent, was brought to a complete halt.

As the Minister in charge of the subject, after observing this place on several occasions, I made a special appeal to the President and pointed out that it is a big crime not to finish the work in the last phase of this project.
