Five DMT staffers, two others tried by CIABOC

Five vehicles handed over to Customs
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has recently initiated legal action in the High Court against seven individuals including five Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) employees for illegally registering hundreds of vehicles including luxury cars which have not been cleared by the Customs.
It was reported earlier that around 400 vehicles have been imported and registered with the DMT by illegal means even before clearing Customs within the last few years.
The CIABOC conducting investigations into this incident have been able to recover the details pertaining to 156 vehicles out of 400 and the prosecution has been initiated accordingly.
According to the Commission, the Sri Lankan government has suffered a huge loss of tax revenue due to this scam.
Out of 156 vehicles, six have been taken into the custody of the CIABOC and five of them have already been handed over to the Sri Lanka Customs in par with the order by the Colombo Chief Magistrate Court for further investigations. Meanwhile, the Commissioner General of DMT informed that three of the five employees have been interdicted with immediate effect on the request of the Bribery Commission until the investigations are completed.
The interdicted employees include an Investigation Officer, an IT officer and a Clerk.
The DMT is also conducting a separate internal investigation into the incident, the Commissioner General said.
