Commemoration of 138th Birth Anniversary of ANCL Founder D.R. Wijewardene

Ven Professor Ittademaliye Indrasara Thera, in his Anusasana at an Almsgiving held at the ANCL premises, to commemorate the 138th birth anniversary of ANCL founder D.R. Wijewardene, emphasised that the late D.R. Wijewardene, should be acknowledged for his significant contribution in enabling members of the Maha Sangha to pursue higher education at universities, thereby rendering an indelible service for the promotion of Buddhism in the country.

“It is with this intention in mind, that the Late Wijewardene built an abode at the University of Peradeniya premises, dedicated to members of the Maha Sangha aspiring to reach the top rung of education,” the Thera said.

The Thera said that the Late Wijewardene, following in the footsteps of his mother Helena Wijewardene Lamatheni, extended his assistance for the development of temples such as Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya, Gangaramaya temple and Vajiraramaya in Bambalapitiya.

“He was pivotal in nurturing Sinhala Literature and Culture by allocating more pages of ANCL publications for the Sinhala language”, the Thera said.

The Thera added that the service rendered by the Late Wijewardene to free the country from the clutches of colonials is immense. “He was a formidable force behind the Independence of the country”, the Thera said.

ANCL Chairman Professor Harendra Kariyawasam, Director Editorial Sisira Paranathanthri, Legal Director Janaka Ranatunga, Director Operations Manjula Makumbura, Director Finance Dr Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne and Company Secretary Sudharshi Hewawasam graced the occasion.
