Agrarian Development Commissioner General Mr. A.M.H.L Abeyrathna said that the amount of 11 billion rupees provided by the government as fertilizer subsidy to the farmers who grow paddy in the high season by the government has been completed by yesterday.
Yesterday (27) a discussion was held with agricultural research and production assistants at the Department of Agrarian Development under the participation of the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries has decided to release an amount of 15,000 rupees per hectare to farmers’ accounts in the 2023/24 season.
11.6 billion rupees have been allocated by the government for this purpose.
Out of that total amount, 11 billion rupees have been credited to the farmer’s accounts by yesterday and about 06 tenths of the amount is left to be given. Farmers in Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts start paddy cultivation later than other areas.
Therefore, the Commissioner General says that only those two districts are left to pay money, and in addition to this, if a few farmers in other areas have not received the relevant money, the reason may be due to the errors in the account numbers or names given by them.
However, the Commissioner General also mentioned that the money related to 98 percent of all the farmers who cultivated paddy has been transferred to their accounts.
The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, who expressed his opinion, said that the way the officers of the Department of Agricultural Development worked together affected the increase in the paddy harvest this year, and the Department of Agrarian Development deserves the gratitude of everyone in the country.
