0 5

Due to the devastation of immovable and movable property by wild elephants in border villages of Matale district, the residents over 28 villages are getting ready to leave their traditional homesteads in fear of their lives.

They said that every day, the wild elephants from Sigiriya, Wasgamuwa and Kahalla-Pallekele sanctuaries, are invading nearby villages and wrecking all the properties belonging to these innocent villagers.

The electric fences erected by the wildlife conservation department to deter the forcible entry of wild elephants into these villages, are not being monitored and maintained, resulting in many sections of these fences being broken, enabling the animals to creep through and continue its havoc.

The villagers have informed the wildlife officials in this regarding on several occasions, but to no avail. Unfortunately, during the last period it resulted in a number of human lives being destroyed by these wild animals in search of food.

Officials complain that without the necessary facilities they are unable to perform their required duties.

Therefore, considering that living in these villages is a threat to life, the best possible move is to leave the area to save their families, seeing that the authorities don’t seem to be in the least concerned.
