Ambassadors join GAFSO Symposium to promote social cohesion

In a concerted effort to foster peace and social cohesion within communities, the Group Action For Social Order (GAFSO) hosted a symposium at the Malihaikkadu Reception Hall in Sri Lanka recently. The event Chaired by Group Action for Social Order (GAFSO) Director A. J. Kamil Imdad, aimed to underscore the pivotal role of unity in societal development and progress.

The symposium commenced with a warm welcome from Kamil, followed by an insightful introductory session led by Dr. Aslam Saja who is the advisor to the Regional Hub for Social Cohesion Initiatives in Ampara District. Dr. Saja emphasised the significance of the symposium, titled “Linking Communities to Promote Social Cohesion” in advocating for peace and social harmony.

Former Member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka A.M.M Naushad, delivered a keynote speech, wherein he stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in nurturing social cohesion. Guests of honour Siri Walt, Ambassador of Switzerland to Sri Lanka, and Ambassador designate to the Maldives, reiterated the imperative of district-level symposiums and the active involvement of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in fostering unity.

Adding their voices to the discourse, Mizukoshi Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, and High Commissioner of South Africa to Sri Lanka, Sandile Edwin Schalk, shared their perspectives on social cohesion, underlining its global significance.

During the event, GAFSO introduced the Peace Leaders Award, honouring individuals who have made outstanding contributions to peace-building efforts.

The awardees included I.L.Hashim, Jenitha Mohan, and M.Hithayathullah.

Furthermore, researchers presented their findings on topics related to cohesion, peace, and conflict resolution. Certificates were awarded to those who presented papers, recognising their valuable contributions to the symposium.

The event witnessed a diverse gathering of individuals, including government officials, former Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University Sri Lanka, religious leaders, secretaries and officials to respective Embassies, social influencers, media representatives, youth activists, as well as GAFSO staff and volunteers. Their collective participation enriched the symposium, reaffirming the shared commitment to promoting social cohesion and peace within Sri Lanka and beyond.

The symposium served as a testament to the collaborative spirit necessary for building resilient and harmonious societies, echoing GAFSO’s unwavering dedication to fostering unity and understanding among communities.
