Ven. Omalpe Thera says how he let Gota leave country despite Aragalists’ obstructions

Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera yesterday said that he made necessary facilities for former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to leave the country during the Aragalaya with the objective of restoring the government mechanism. 

The Thera said that there was a suspicion that his life was at risk when leaving the country through airport “At that point of time there was a protest at VIP lounge demanding the authorities not to allow former President to leave the country.

Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera added he intervened to ensure him a safe passage by holding discussion with the factions involved in protests. “The book published by the former President mentioned about our activities.Reference on Buddhist monks including me in this book gives wrong picture to the average citizens.Such reference gives an indication that I was also involved in this consipiracy, the Thera said.

The Thera said that he does not have any personal issues with former President or his relatives and brothers who are in politics.

He said that the people faced unprecedented hardships due the situation prevailed in the country and they took to streets. “The Buddhist monks including the Mahanayake Thera gave an ear to the issues faced by the people. At last the former President decided to leave the country”, the Thera said.

Ven.Omalpe Thera said that the former President was in fear of death when he decided to leave the country and we were in constant touch with the officials who were very close to him.
