“I cut short foreign tour and returned to vote against NCM”

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana yesterday said that he returned the country without attending international conference organized by the World Bank in Washington to express his solidarity for speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena who played a crucial role in preventing the country from descending into anarchy during the Aragalaya.

He said that a No Confidence Motion has been submitted against the speaker who was committed in protecting the parliamentary democracy during the struggle.

“Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena fulfilled a crucial duty during the Aragalaya and prevented the country from going in a different direction,” he said.

Speaking to the media on his return to the country at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Minister Dr. Gunawardhana said that it is the responsibility of him and his government to protect the Speaker.

He said that he had gone to Washington, USA on March 17 to participate in an international conference organized by the World Bank for the year 2024. “When I arrived in Washington,the Sri Lankan envoy in the US informed me that President Ranil Wickremesinghe had notified me to return to the country soon to vote against the NCM on Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena,” he said.

The Minister further said that he has returned after delegating powers to the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States of America to participate in the conference.
