Livestock Development State Minister D. B. Herath assured consumers of a stable supply of essential food items at fair prices during the upcoming festive season.

He highlighted that measures have been put in place to prevent shortages and ensure the well-being of both farmers and consumers through an effective programme implementation system.

The State Minister was addressing a press briefing titled “Collective Path to a Stable Country” held at the Presidential Media Centre (PMC) yesterday (21).

He also mentioned that the government has introduced numerous programmes aimed at minimising crop damage by promoting post-harvest technology among farmers and readying the nation for the impending global food crisis.

Addressing the media Herath said the Agriculture Ministry has allocated the required funds for the purchase paddy from the farmers. Recently, the prices of vegetables and fruits have increased drastically. The Ministry intervened and implemented several measures to boost vegetable and fruit production to address this issue. As a result, market prices for these items have been stabilized. Presently, we are devising a strategy to progress while ensuring the welfare of both consumers and producers.

Efforts have been made to minimise crop wastage by introducing post-harvest technology to farmers. Additionally, initiatives have been undertaken to achieve self-sufficiency by producing meat and eggs to meet the protein requirements of the population. The Ministry of Agriculture has launched a programme aimed at boosting milk production. To enhance animal production, the Department of Health and 09 Provincial Councils collaborated to improve the quality of animal husbandry practices. Furthermore, with French assistance, plans have been made to open six factories to increase liquid milk production. As of now, three factories have already commenced operations.

“President Ranil Wickremesinghe is effectively meeting the challenges of improving citizens’ living standards and shaping a future-ready younger generation. Additionally, several welfare programmes are being implemented, including support for the elderly and relief measures for low-income earners.

“The government has endeavoured to establish a situation where consumers can access essential goods at fair prices without facing shortages during the approaching festive season. Thanks to the current agricultural policy of the government, there has been successful rice production to meet consumption needs. Consequently, preparations are underway to host the National New Rice Festival on April 6, near the Sri Maha Bodhi under the patronage of President Ranil Wickremesinghe,”Herath said.
