German-SL Friendship Maternity Hospital (Teaching), Karapitiya, to be vested with the Public

German-Sri Lanka Friendship Maternity Hospital (Teaching) in Karapitiya, Galle, considered the largest Maternity Hospital in South Asia, will be vested with the Public tomorrow (27), in the presence of President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana.

The Maternity Hospital in Karapitiya, consists of 14 Wards with a 600-bed capacity, and has Clinical facilities to treat 200 outpatients daily as well. The six storey hospital complex also consists of six Operation Theatres, two Neonatal Intensive Care Units (ICUs), Laboratories and special Paediatric treatment units including all required modern Medical and Surgical equipment.

The construction of this state-of-the-art Hospital is from a partial loan and partial grant of 25 million Euros (Rs. 357 billion) from the German Government.

Mahamodara Maternity Hospital was seriously damaged due to the Tsunami disaster and was reconstructed with the financial assistance from the German Government.

The project commenced in 2005 on State land with financial assistance from the late German Chancellor Josef Michael Kohl. But construction activities, which were temporarily halted in 2018, due to non-receipt of funds, recommenced in 2012.

An agreement was signed between the Government of Sri Lanka and German KFW Bank in 2018, for a loan of Rs. 13 million Euros, which later was converted to a grant.
