Ceylon Sugar Company Director and CEO Major Vajira Kumaratunga said a probe will be done over the incident involving the mixing of water with the furnace oil used to operate boilers at the distillery of Sevanagala Sugar Factory, which is under the ownership of Ceylon Sugar Company.

During the company’s operations on March 10, it was discovered that water had inadvertently mixed with the furnace oil due to a malfunction. The refinery comprises two 50,000-liter furnace oil tanks, into which two fuel oil bowers, each containing 13,200 liters, were added on March 8.

Subsequently, on March 9, 8,000 liters of furnace oil were released to the boilers, and on the 10th, the boilers were found to be non-operational. As part of the investigation process, fuel samples obtained from the bowser have been analysed. The bowser consists of four chambers within a tank; however, only one chamber has been tested for fuel oil contamination.
