The Ministry of Indigenous Medicine has designated April 18, the auspicious day to plant trees for the New Year as National Moringa Day.

The Indigenous Medicine Ministry is doing this with view to focusing people’s attention on eating parts of the Moringa tree, especially Moringa leaves, recognised worldwide as a highly Nutritious and Medicinal food.

Accordingly, the forthcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year tree planting day will be designated National Moringa Day in this country, said Indigenous Medicine State Minister Sisira Jayakodi.

The State Ministry of Indigenous Medicine, Department of Ayurveda, Ayurveda Conservation Board and Moringa for Life International Organisation have jointly taken steps to make people aware of the use of Moringa as a nutritional food supplement, and are requested to plant a Moringa plant on the day of tree planting for the New Year.  According to this, the national program of planting Moringa saplings will be implemented on New Year’s eve, said State Minister Jayakodi,

The Sri Lanka Director of Moringa for Life International Organisatio, Wasantha Kulatunga explained the facts to the State Minister and the officials about the nutritional value of Moringa leaves in the discussion held recently at the State  Ministry. Kulatunga also presented a comprehensive Research book on Moringa to the State Minister.

The Research findings in the tests conducted by Mrs. Moriko Gilffod, a Japanese national, at the Moringa Research Institute in California, USA, and Mrs. Dhamayanthi Joan Lee at the Moringa Research and Study Center in Trincomalee, have been included in the Research book.
