A 39-year-old man died after a drinking challenge in Hatton.
Ganeshan Ramachandran, a resident of the Marlborough portion of the Ledanti Estate in Hatton, took on the challenge to drink 750 ml of arrack at a competition organized by a group of youth.
The competition had been held on Thursday night following an annual religious festival at the kovil in the estate.
Three people residing in the same estate had joined the competition and three 750 ml bottles of arrack had been given to each of them. The person who finished the bottle first would be the winner. According to a worker at the estate, the deceased had consumed liquor even before the competition and was in a semi-intoxicated state when the challenge began.
The eldest daughter of the deceased has said in the post-mortem examination that her father who came home at night on Wednesday, was found dead in his sleep in the early hours of Thursday morning (28). Another person who participated in this competition too had become seriously ill and after being admitted to the Dickoya Primary Hospital had been transferred to the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital for further treatment.
The cause of death has been recorded as pneumonia and asphyxiation of the jugular vein due to food getting stuck. The Police are conducting further investigations.
