Ayurvedic Act will help promotion of indigenous medicine products globally – Health Minister

Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said in Parliament on Monday (1) that the regulations under the Ayurvedic Act presented to Parliament on March 19 would be helpful for the promotion of scientific testing of indigenous medicine products globally.

The Minister said that the Ayurveda Act will be amended after 62 years and as there is a high demand for indigenous medicine and Ayurveda, it has been identified as a major foreign exchange earning sector in Sri Lanka.

The Minister said this while joining the debate on the amendment of the Ayurveda Act.

The Minister also said that under the enactment of Section 77 of the Ayurveda Act No. 31 of 1961, and establishment of the Ayurvedic Drugs and Products Regulatory Council, there are regulations for local drug production, shops, medical equipment, local cosmetic products, drug storage and transport, import and export of drugs, herb cultivation related to the pharmaceutical industry, etc.

Four Committees will be appointed to form the Ayurvedic Medicines and Products Regulatory Council. Accordingly, the Ayurvedic Technical Committee, Ayurvedic Factory Store Evaluation Committee, Ayurvedic Product and Market Investigation Committee, Drug Supply and Herbal Evaluation Officer Committee will be appointed.

Millions of people in this country have been cured by taking Ayurvedic treatment. When the Covid crisis occurred, the management of the disease received praise from across the globe. Ayurvedic medicines also helped with that.

There is a shortage of contact lenses in some places. Paying attention to that, necessary procurement activities have been carried out and steps have been taken to get the relevant lenses in Sri Lanka.

Also, the Government has taken steps to provide medicines that are in short supply in hospitals. Many programmes are being implemented regarding nutrition for children. Accordingly, it is expected that the malnutrition problem will be reduced to a large extent this year.

Throughout history, vaccination has had a special status for maternal protection. The other countries have recognised Sri Lanka as a leading country in the world.

Non-communicable diseases are spreading widely across the country. More cancer patients are being reported. More attention should be given to providing the necessary treatment to alleviate their pain. There is backwardness in addressing the health status of the elderly people in this country. We have taken steps to provide the most successful treatment to the people according to the provisions received by the Health Ministry.
