Thousands of dead fish have washed up on the beach of the Mundalama lagoon.
Fishermen say engaging in their profession has been hampered and environmental issues have arisen due the large number of dead fish washing ashore.
Fishermen said fish dying in the lagoon had started about two days back and it had increased by yesterday morning. It is said that around 2,000 fishermen are engaged in the Mundalama lagoon area and around another 1,000 depend on the lagoon indirectly for their livelihood.
Fishermen and environmental organizations allege that the businessmen involved in the shrimp industry in the ponds around the Mundalama lagoon are mixing various chemicals in the ponds and this has resulted in polluting the lagoon water. It is said that thousands of dead fish are floating in the lagoon and also they get washed ashore.
They say that due to this, a bad odour is spreading in the area due to rotting fish and activities at houses, schools and churches near the lagoon have been hampered. Fishermen urge authorities to look into the matter at the earliest and find viable and lasting solutions.
