“Appointing Nimal Siripala as SLFP Acting Chairman not legally valid”
Acting General Secretary of the SLFP Sarathi Dushmantha Mithrapala, representing the SLFP faction led by Maithripala Sirisena, said yesterday that according to the SLFP party constitution, only the chairman of the party can call a Politburo meeting, and no decision or request can be made without the chairman presiding, which has been conveyed by him by letter to Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
Mithrapla said that it against such a background that an SLFP Politburo meeting had been called illegally against the SLFP constitution, by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Senior Vice President of the party, as currently the SLFP does not have a chairman to call such a Politburo meeting as Maithripala Sirisena has been temporarily barred from functioning as its Chairman, after the Colombo District Court issued an interim restraining order on April 4 preventing former President Sirisena from serving as the chairman.
The SLFP faction led by Maithripala Sirisena further said that, therefore, any appointment of Acting Chairman must be conducted through a Court order. The group added that many who had participated in yesterday’s SLFP Politburo meeting were not members of the party.
The SLFP faction also revealed that legal action would be initiated against the illegal actions taken during yesterday’s meeting.
