“Appointment of Wijedasa Rajapaksa as the Acting Chairman of SLFP completely illegal”

A group led by former President Maithripala Sirisena recently worked to appoint Mr.Wijedasa Rajapaksa as the Acting Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. This decision is completely illegal. The court has issued an injunction against the former president as well as the secretary from dealing with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party until the 9th of next month.

The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera expressed these views yesterday (22) while participating in a press conference held at his home in Agunakolapalasse.

The Minister who further commented-

Despite this, it is illegal to call such a meeting as well as take such a decision. And it is contempt of court. Therefore, we are going to court regarding this matter. The former chairman has no authority to be involved in this matter. He has committed contempt of court.

The other thing is that a political committee was called recently. There were some vagabonds and some dealers in it. The Politburo was not represented there.

Mr. Nimal Siripala de Silva has been appointed as the Acting Chairman in a previous Politburo meeting. No one has taken legal action against that appointment till today. That alone shows that the appointment is legal. Sri Lanka Freedom Party also needs to know this matter. Mr. Nimal Siripala de Silva has now been appointed as the acting chairman of this party. That activity is legal.

This illegal meeting has been fully intervened by the officers of the Presidential Security Division who have been assigned to protect former President Methripala Sirisena. They have prevented some groups from entering. They have done all the interventions during the meeting. Also, the people of this security division have threatened the group including Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala who protested the appointment of Mr. Wijedasa Rajapaksa.

Maithripala Sirisena has given more than 150 members of the security forces to the former president. Also, a separate STF

group has been given. Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike has also been given a group of 50. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa needs security. Because he was the one who ended the war. He needs protection because there are some threats. But why does former President Maithripala Sirisena have so many bodyguards? What is the threat to his life? And what did he do?

  These people have been given for the protection of those elite, not to interfere in political affairs. Therefore, we are complaining to the Minister dealing with security, and we are requesting that an immediate investigation be initiated regarding the security officers of the former President Maithripala Sirisena, who intervened to hold this illegal meeting.

They have no right to engage in political activities or threaten people.

We know that recently a famous businessman met the former president. He is a presidential candidate. 100 million rupees have been requested from that businessman. But the businessman refused. When I asked about it, the former chairman accepted it. He is auctioning this party to find money to spend on his cases. It is unfair for Sri Lanka Freedom Party to interfere in their personal issues.

Also, Professor Rohana Lakshman Piyadasala opened his mouth and said that this problem is because we are in the government. Is Wijedasa Rajapaksa not a member of the government? We ask the fact that those who proposed and approved the appointment of Mr. Wijedasa Rajapaksa did so while wearing cloths.

Then the former members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party are not good. These people also say that someone from another party is better for the chairmanship. I am asking the question that how much money did those who proposed and confirmed Mr. Wijedasa Rajapaksa for the acting presidency received.

A few stalwarts of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party are destroying the party today under the influence of money. They are destroying the party to save themselves from the lawsuits they have. We will not allow that. A large number of people went to other parties in the past because they could not bear the behavior of the former president of the party.

But we will not allow this party to be destroyed. We protect this party. We protect this party from dealers and rascals. We promise that to all of our party.

This party will not be destroyed. We request all members to be patient.
