Auspicious day for tree planting for Sinhala and Tamil New Year will be named ‘National Moringa Day’

State Minister of Indigenous Medicine Sisira Jayakody said that the declaration of National Moringa Day will be done immediately to make people aware of the nutritious and medicinal value of moringa.

The moringa plant, which is accepted by the whole world as a medicine and food with nutritional properties, is used to eliminate malnutrition in many countries. In order to make parts of the moringa plant an essential component of our daily diet and to encourage people to grow moringa in every house and to make people interested in it, the auspicious day of tree planting of the Sinhala Tamil New Year will be named as National Moringa Day.

The State Minister stated this while participating in the auspicious ceremony of planting moringa saplings held at the Gangarama Temple premises recently.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine, Department of Ayurveda, Sri Lanka Ayurveda Drugs Corporation and ‘Moringa for Life’ international organisation together with the Ayurvedic Conservation Councils established across the country will start a comprehensive programme jointly to plant a moringa plant in every house, State Minister Jayakody said.

On this occasion, Ven. Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thera, founder of the ‘Moringa for Life’ organisation Mariko Gifford of Japan, who conducted research and informed the whole world about the medicinal value of the moringa plant, Chairperson of the Moringa Research and Study Centre in Trincomalee, Damayanthi Joan Lee, representatives from Nagaland and Karunataka states in India and several others participated.
