Prison officers call off strike on promise of authorities to look into salary issue
Prisons Commissioner and Prisons Media Spokesman Gamini B. Dissanayake said that steps have been taken by the Prison officers to call off the strike that they engaged in on Monday (20).
Prison officers engaged in a trade union action since Monday morning demanding a salary increase of Rs. 20,000.
A special discussion was held yesterday (21) between the Commissioner General of Prisons, senior Prison officials and the officers who engaged in the strike by not reporting to work on Monday, having applied sick leave.
The Commissioner General of Prisons has informed them, during the discussion, not to allow judicial proceedings to be disrupted and not to act in a way that interferes with prison activities and proceedings.
Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, PC, stated on Monday (20) that he will submit a Cabinet paper to provide an allowance of Rs. 15,000 to fulfil the request of the prison officers, as it is a reasonable request, and that he will ensure that the prison officers demanding a salary increase will get due justice.
Prisons Media Spokesman Dissanayake said that the prison officers who were engaged in the strike action have stated that they will end the strike and report to work relying on the promise that was given by the Justice Minister.
