Rebuilding Peace Sri Lanka (RPSL) President Sabri Haleemdeen said that the RPSL made serious effort to promote reconciliation among communities by launching a number of awareness programmes.

The RPSL president was speaking to the media during its second AGM held in Mount Lavinia on Sunday.

The RPSL which was set up in the aftermath of Easter Sunday attacks was aimed at building bridges among communities.

Haleemdeen said the Muslim community was looked upon as second class citizens in the country in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday attacks even though they did everything possible to safeguard the integrity of the country for centuries.

He said that the RPSL comprises professionals and eminent personalities representing legal, medical, business and education sectors.

Haleemdeen said that the people have now realised the importance of having closer amity among other communities. “They have come to know that the campaign against the Muslim community was politically motivated”, he said.

He said that the British also followed the divide and rule policy to make the administration of the country easier.

General Secretary Dr. Shamila Dawood, Treasurer M. M. N. Munawwara, Vice Presidents Prof. M. S. M. Aslam, Wazeer Mukthar, Patron and Vice President Saif Hanifa participated.

The new office-bearers were elected and it was decided to take steps towards peace in Sri Lanka in the future.
