Judicial power should be further extended at village level – NPP
National People’s Power (NPP), executive member Lal Kantha said their stance on extending judicial power to the village level remains unchanged. He noted that the people continue to operate by creating laws and implementing them, with funeral assistance societies being an example of such grassroots legal frameworks.
Lal Kantha made these remarks during a National People’s Power campaign programme held in Kundasale.
He further stated:”The process of administering of the law, which currently reaches the Magistrate’s Courts, should be extended further down. The right of the common people to retain political power should be formally and scientifically enshrined in the Constitution and granted to them. In this way, even now, the laws of funeral assistance societies have been created and implemented by the people themselves. Life encompasses more than just death. There are many other tasks that can be structured similarly. The people can come together to create and implement their own constitution. They can enforce it themselves and benefit from it. This system already exists. We should formalise and expand it further to provide more opportunities to the people. There is no difference in the stance that the power of the people should be returned to the people.”
He also commented on Presidential elections, saying:”A Presidential Election involves candidates who are open to debate, not others. What is the point of debating with committees in the jungle? We learn nothing from debating with those guys. They are the ones who have ruled this country, and the current state of the country is due to their policies. The people can see the results of their economic policies. On one side, there is really nothing to discuss. But in a Presidential Election, debates are usually held between Presidential candidates, as seen in countries like America. Policy clarifications are made. It’s good if something like that happens here. There is no point in discussing matters with economic committees, health committees, or forest committees. Either with Sajith or Ranil. There is no point in debating with people who are not involved in the presidential election. It has no scientific basis.”
