SLPA officials visit Virginia Port

Officials of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) recently visited Virginia Port as part of a capacity-building project funded by the U.S. State Department and executed by the Colombo Plan. During the visit, the delegation gained further knowledge on semi-automated port operations and new technological advancements. These insights are crucial for enhancing both efficiency and profitability in port operations.

Virginia Port is known as the most modern gateway port in the U.S. It serves not only as an entry and departure point for goods but also as a hub where businesses and capabilities converge to create significant opportunities. With six world-class terminals and strategic transportation access, the port is well-positioned to be a strategic port. The port features state-of-the-art technical systems and operations designed to improve productivity in a shorter time frame.

During their visit, SLPA officials gained exposure to semi-automated systems in operation and observed how the port plans to achieve sustainable operations, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This goal is supported by 100% clean electricity and the largest fleet of hybrid equipment.
