The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, instructed the Department of Agrarian Development to provide Parachute Discs worth 40 lakh rupees to 4000 farmers under 25 percent subsidy basis in the 2024 maha season
The Minister also said that the Honorable President has given approval to provide the necessary financial allocations for this purpose.
Under the program of introducing new agricultural technology to the farmers, the use of these parachute discs has been introduced for planting paddy seedlings.
Agriculture departments point out that the use of parachute discs for paddy cultivation can get more yields, while not having to spend money on weed control, and because the minimum amount of fertilizer can be used, the farmers can reduce the expenditure of money on improper cultivation.
Due to this, the Department of Agrarian Development has taken steps to provide parachute discs to 4000 farmers for 1000 acres fewer than 25 percent concessional basis in the coming season.
On average, 400 parachute discs are required to grow an acre of paddy. The cost of 100 of them has to be borne by the farmer and 300 is sponsored by the government. Accordingly, steps have been taken to provide the 300 parachute discs free of charge, says the Department of Agrarian Development.
1000 parachute discs are required per hectare and 750 parachute discs are provided free of charge by the government to the farmers. The cost of 250 parachute discs has to be borne by the farmer. Generally, these parachute discs can be used for about six paddy cultivation seasons, the Department of Agriculture has emphasized.
