The Health Promotion Bureau (HPB) urges the public to strictly follow the guidelines issued by the Sri Lankan Health authorities and stay informed to protect from the threat of avian influenza (Bird Flu).
“In light of recent human cases of avian influenza (H9) reported in India, we must update our knowledge of the disease to prevent an outbreak and act responsibly if an outbreak takes place in Sri Lanka,” HPB said.
According to the HPB sources, avian influenza, commonly known as Bird Flu, is a viral infection that can spread from birds to humans. While rare, human cases can occur, and it’s crucial to be informed and cautious.
The HPB urges the public to avoid contact with wild birds, avoid touching wild birds or their droppings and avoid visiting live bird markets or poultry farms unless necessary.
The HPB further stressed the importance of practicing good hygiene: wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after handling poultry or eggs and use hand sanitisers when soap and water are not available.
They also urge the public to ensure that all poultry and eggs are cooked properly to kill any viruses. Avoid consuming raw or undercooked poultry products.
If any person encounters any sick or dead birds, report them to local health authorities immediately without handling it.
The Virology Department at the MRI, of the Health Ministry has established advanced PCR testing for H9 influenza and our existing capacity to detect H5 and H7 strains.
“We have achieved 100 percent accuracy in the WHO Bird Flu External Quality Assessment Programme for the past 12 years. So we can assure you that the highest standards of detection and safety systems are available at the Health Ministry to face a threat of Avian Flu,” HPB stated.
