Institute of Chemistry Ceylon holds annual ‘All Island Inter-School Quiz’ competition
The All-Island Inter School Chemistry Quiz organised by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, who have excelled in the chemistry curriculum at the Advanced Levels commenced with the first stage being held on February 16.
Catering to students of all the nine provinces under the guidance of Vipula Kulathunga, Deputy Director of Education (Science) at the Ministry of Education and Dr. Laksiri Weerasinghe, Chairperson All Island Chemistry Quiz Committee, 2024.
Compiled of 40 multiple choice questions in all three languages, the written selection examination was conducted in 30 islandwide selected examination centres where a number of 201 schools took part was coordinated by the Zonal Directors of the Ministry of Education. After a grappling first stage of the quiz, the top four teams and the best team from each province undermentioned were advanced to the second stage.
The advancing teams were – J/Jaffna Hindu College, BT/St. Michael’s College, J/Hartley College, J/Vembadi Girls High School, WP/GM/Bandaranayake College Gampaha, Ananda Vidayala, Colombo, Central College Badulla, A/Anuradhapura Central College, kg/Mw/Zahira Collegec Mawanella, Highlands College Hatton, G/Sacred Herat Convent, Badulla Central College and Giri/Kekunagolla National School.
The second stage of the quiz was held on June 7, at Adamantane House, IChemC Rajagiriya, with the participation of ten school teams.
Following the inauguration of the next phase by the IChemC President, Prof Namal Priyantha, the first contest of this phase compiled of an onsite theory examination composed of 25 multiple choice questions, resulted in four teams with the best performances gaining ground in the final round; the oral contest of the All Island interschool Chemistry Quiz.
The advancing teams were – J/Jaffna Hindu College, BT/St. Michael’s College, J/Hartley College and Badulla Central College The final phase had the best four members from each team elected based on the onsite examination results competing in an initial first round of oral questions followed by a buzzer round.
With Prof Dhammika Dissanayake moderating all the questions in the oral examination, the judge panel for the last round were Prof. M.D. Deeyamulla from University of Kelaniya, Dr. Manuja Lamabadusuriya from University of Colombo and Dr. Keerth Attanayake from Institute of Chemistry Ceylon along with Dr. Sashipraba Vithanarachchi, Department Chemistry University of Colombo who served as the quiz master.
Advancing through the preliminary rounds and onto the convoluted last stages,Hartley College, Jaffna was placed third and Badulla Central College was placed second after a grueling competition,whereas St. Michael’s College, Batticaloa bagged this year’s title at the All Island Chemistry Quiz where Lingeswaran Thanojith from St. Michael’s College, Batticaloa displayed his unabating proficiency that rewarded him with the Best Individual Performance and his school with this utmost victory.
