The young seven member Sri Lankan team ‘Astral Thinkers’ have emerged as the winner of the Most Creative Category at the GLEE (Great Lunar Expedition for Everyone) Mission Lunar Deployment Mechanism (LDM) Challenge with their innovative LDM design ‘Satyr’. This mission is working for NASA’s Artemis programme and the Colorado Space Grant Consortium (COSGC).

The team members included K.G. Navindu Obhasa Jayawardhane from St. John’s College, Nugegoda, Dinodh Hasmira Dasanayake from Nalanda College, Colombo 10, Vinuji Dahamsa Batuwangala from Homagama Central College, Shenon Kaushika Ganewatta from Nalanda College, Colombo 10, Senuja Linath from Thurstan College, Colombo 07, Sadeesha Akalanka Tantiriwatta from Nalanda College, Colombo 10, and T.G. Kosanda Hasith Mayanga from St. John’s College, Nugegoda.

With seven teenagers competing against college students across the globe, Astral Thinkers claims to have been the youngest team to participate in the tournament.

Astral Thinkers also stated that Satyr, their innovative LDM design, can distribute 96 LunaSats across the moon’s surface. The design features a hexagonal prism structure, with each side holding a compartment (the Sat-Arm) that carries the LunaSats in an accordion fold. Each Sat-Arm is divided into 16 squares, each holding one LunaSat. The accordion-folded Sat-Arm can expand to a length of 1.5 metres and contract to 8 cms.
