The lack of milk cows that can produce more milk to boost the dairy industry in Sri Lanka has had a great impact on our country.
The amount of milk obtained from buffaloes and cows in our country is about 10 liters per day. But through new agricultural technology, it is possible to get up to 60 liters of milk three times a day from one cow.
Considering this situation, the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, discussed with the Indian Ambassador and the High Commissioner of Pakistan in our country, the acquisition of Indian and Pakistani improved milk cows and buffaloes.
The government has decided to give priority to the promotion of the dairy industry next year. The minister mentioned that the government has taken many steps to achieve that goal.
Even so, both India and Pakistan are currently following a policy of not giving their cattle to other countries. But the first time they agreed to give their cattle to Sri Lanka.
The Pakistani High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Major General Faheem Ul Aziz, recently met the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera and discussed these matters. The minister mentioned the current situation regarding milk production in the country and said that Indian government has expressed agreement to give the milk cows to Sri Lanka on the basis of India’s diplomatic relations to increase milk production in the country.
Therefore, the government expects that Pakistan will also show support in this regard, the minister said. The Pakistani High Commissioner mentioned that considering the request made by the minister, the Pakistani government will also provide the necessary support to Sri Lanka.
According to these discussions, the Indian government is going to give the Sahiwal type of cattle and Pakistan the Mura type of buffalo to Sri Lanka. The minister also mentioned that these cows will be available this year and that the country will be able to increase the production of milk.
Cows and buffaloes suitable for the climatic conditions of our country are found only in India and Pakistan. A few years ago, although cattle were imported from New Zealand and Australia, those projects failed.
