Dairy farmers in the Matale district are lamenting they’re without even the basic facilities to maintain their farms for a long time now. The prices of fodder and medicines are increasing day by day in the market while they have no reasonable prizes for their milk based products. Those are main influential things to set back this industry, the dairy farmers said.

The grazing lands in the area which were under the forest reserves, have grabbed by the powerful persons for their individual activities. Therefore, these farmers have deprived their traditional forest reserves where they were used as the grazing sights earlier.

In this situation, farmers have to spend more for the fodder of these animals. Accordingly, they have to leave this industry which was initiated as self employment. So also, more than 10,000 major and minor scale farmers are handling the dairy farms in the district at the moment.

However, in the prevailing condition, dairy farm industry in the district is in declension in the area. In the meantime, if the government keeps silence regarding this matter, the entire lot of dairy farms will have to be closed down without any hesitation, the farmers said.

Therefore, the government should take immediate action to preserve this valuable industry as it is the main money generating movement in the country.
