Suraksha student insurance scheme resumes again for three years

The government has taken measures to resume the Suraksha Student Insurance Programme which was temporarily suspended due to economic challenges.

Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardhana said the Cabinet of Ministers has granted its consent to the joint proposal furnished by President Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies Minister  with the Education Minister to award the contract of Suraksha Student Insurance Coverage to Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited for three years.

He was speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department.

Approval has also been granted to award the death benefit of parents under life insurance which is entitled to the students of families whose annual income is less than Rs.180,000 to students of the families covered under the ‘Aswasuma’ programme as well.

Approval of the Cabinet of Ministers was granted at their meeting held on May 6, 2024 to execute the Suraksha Student Insurance Coverage programme once again and call quotations from Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation for this.

Hence, having evaluated the bidding proposal furnished by Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation by the negotiation committee appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers, it has been recommended to execute the Suraksha Student Insurance Coverage for the years 2024/2025, 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 for an amount of Rs.6.027 billion (excluding VAT).
