Breastfeeding for six months helps raise a healthy child – Dr. Lucas

Providing breast milk to newborns for six months can contribute to raising a healthy child, Colombo University Senior Lecturer and Neonatologist at De Soysa Women’s Hospital, Dr.Nishani Lucas said.

Dr.Lucas emphasized the crucial role of family support in breastfeeding and assured that a mother’s milk is never insufficient for the baby.

National Breastfeeding Week, aimed at promoting breastfeeding, is declared from August 1 to 7.The theme for this year is “Closing the Gap – Supporting Breastfeeding for All.” Dr. Lucas shared these insights during a media briefing held by the Health Promotion Bureau commemorating National Breastfeeding Week on the 17th.

She explained that at birth, a baby’s stomach is as small as a cherry and takes several weeks to grow to the size of an egg. Breast milk can be stored in a refrigerator for about two weeks. Storing expressed milk ensures that mothers do not stress when unable to extract, as labelled and properly sealed containers can protect the milk from contamination.
