EC to gazette Prez poll nomination, polling days today

The National Election Commission will gazette the date of the Presidential Election today (26). In a statement, the National Election Commission which convened yesterday (25) said that in accordance with the legal provisions of the Presidential Elections Act No. 15 of 1981 that it has decided to publish the Gazette Extraordinary Notification which includes the date of the Presidential Election and the nomination date on July 26,2024.

The Election Commission further stated that the decision was taken during a meeting which was convened yesterday. Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Rathnayake said in his statement that the Election Commission holds no responsibility for the statements made by various individuals and parties regarding the date of the Presidential poll and other constitutional functions.

In a news conference that was held on Wednesday (24), the Election Commission Chairman said that the Election Commission has the capacity and ability and is ready to hold both the Presidential and General Elections in the event of dissolution of Parliament not on the same date but on two suitable dates. Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L.Rathnayake said that although the Supreme Court has issued an interim restraining order on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon that it will not cause any hindrance to the activities of the Presidential Election.

Rathnayake said that an acting IGP will be appointed and the Election Commission will continue the election activities with the acting IGP that will be appointed. The Election Commission was constitutionally vested with powers to declare the Presidential Election date from 17 July, 2024.
