President sole candidate with robust five-point economic strategy – Minister Dr. Bandula

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana announced that President Ranil Wickremesinghe would be the sole candidate running in the upcoming Presidential Election with a robust five-point economic strategy.

He further stated that Prominent Ministers and the majority of the Parliamentary group representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) would support Wickremesinghe’s victory.

Addressing a gathering in Homagama following a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna political meeting, Dr. Gunawardhana highlighted that recent governments had resorted to excessive money printing, leading to inflation and increased cost of living.

He credited President Wickremesinghe for taking measures to curb this practice by introducing new legislation through the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Dr.Gunawardhana emphasised that past administrations borrowed large sums arbitrarily, issuing sovereign bonds at high interest rates. To prevent this, a new credit control law was enacted. Additionally, President Wickremesinghe introduced the Financial Management Act to ensure that future budgets are managed with greater accountability, establishing a separate budget office within Parliament.

Last week, with consensus from all political parties, the Economic Transformation Act was passed to change the country’s economic trajectory. Moreover, a stringent anti-corruption law was also enacted to prevent theft, fraud, and corruption among state sector employees, politicians, and officials.

Dr.Gunawardhana concluded by stating that President Ranil Wickremesinghe would be the only candidate in the upcoming presidential election, equipped with this comprehensive economic strategy.
