The Chief Incumbent of the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo, Ven.Galboda Gnanissara Thera passed away yesterday (2). The 81-year-old monk had been admitted to the hospital due to a health condition.
Gnanissara Thera, a distinguished monk in the lineage of Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera, was widely recognized as “Podihamuduruwo of Gangaramaya.” Known for his leadership and visionary efforts in modernizing the temple, his name became synonymous with the temple’s legacy.
The Gangaramaya Temple is noted for its unique approach, emphasizing close community engagement and accessibility. Under the guidance of Gnanissara Thera, the temple prioritized being approachable, with monks working closely with the public to support their well-being.
This approach is exemplified by the placement of sacred relics, like the Bodhi tree planted by Sumangala Nayaka Thero, in a manner that encourages public worship.
Throughout his leadership, Podihamuduruwo ensured that the temple was a center for disaster relief and community aid.The temple has been proactive in responding to national crises, such as the 2004 tsunami, floods, and the COVID-19 pandemic, garnering widespread respect and support.
Gangaramaya Temple’s inclusive practices included offering blessings and accommodating traditions like the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the temple maintained its operations within health guidelines, highlighting its commitment to community service.
The funeral arrangements for Dr.Galaboda Gnanissara Thera will be held on Monday (5) at 4.30 pm at the temple grounds, the cremation organizing committee said.
