Bakery ingredient prices should be reduced to pass benefits to consumers – ACBOA

The All Ceylon Bakery Owner’s Association (ACBOA) said the prices of ingredients used to manufacture bakery products such as buns, cakes etc should also be reduced, so that the prices of bakery products could be reduced in par with the price of bread that has already been reduced by Rs.10.

The ACBOA says unless reducing the prices of raw materials such as yeast, margarine, vegetable oil and related ingredients that are used to manufacture bakery products, there is no way of reducing the price of bakery products.

President ACBOA told Daily News N.K. Jayawardana said although the value of US dollar has been showing a significant drop the prices of raw materials have not yet been reduced by traders.

He said under such a situation bakery owners especially small scale bakeries are unable to reduce the prices of bakery products although the price of 450 g bread has already been reduced by Rs. 10.00.

“In addition the electricity tariff and the prices LP gas and firewood have also badly affected to bakery owners,” he said.

Speaking on the price of eggs Jayawardana said although poultry farm owners sell their products at reasonable prices the middlemen including traders sell eggs according to their wishes.
