‘If someone asks where Sri Lanka stands today, as far as its foreign policy is concerned, whether we are pro-China or pro-India, it’s going to be a tough question to answer. That’s because for the first time in modern history we have become a truly non-aligned country thanks to the well-balanced foreign policy of President Ranil Wickremesinghe’, Nava Janatha Peramuna Leader Sugeeshwara Bandara said.

Bandara made these remarks at an intellectual forum held in Rathnapura New Town on Saturday (3).

“Ever since independence we have been taking one side or the other, although we liked to call ourselves a non-aligned country. Some of our past Presidents were pro-American, some pro-Chinese and some went the Indian way. However today, for the first time we are not taking any sides,” he added. Commenting on the policies of his own outfit – Nava Janatha Peramuna – Bandara said his party is fully committed to introducing green economic policies. “The climate change has opened the eyes of the world to the reality that there’s no future for human civilization, if it does not follow green economic policies,” said Bandara.
