Under the National Road Rehabilitation Project led by the Ministry of Transport and Highways, the development of the road stretching from the Waga Railway Station to Moraketiya via Pinnawala was inaugurated by Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana.

The road, which is heavily used by a large number of local residents daily, has been in a state of disrepair for a long time, making transportation extremely difficult. Responding to long-standing requests from local representatives and residents, the development work involving carpeting of the road has finally begun.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Dr. Gunawardhana stated, “As the Minister in charge of highways, I have seen road construction projects previously awarded largely to various contractors. To change this situation, funds were allocated to each Member of Parliament to be distributed for their constituencies. These were to be managed by the engineers and officials of the Road Development Authority. However, based on public complaints, it appears that these responsibilities are not being carried out correctly. There are ongoing complaints from the public that the road projects started are not being completed and are prolonged indefinitely. If this continues, we may have to revert to the old method of allowing private contractors to undertake construction. Necessary decisions will be made when required, as we cannot allow a state of anarchy to be created by saboteurs.

“Under the new circumstances in the country, no one in the public sector will benefit from theft. Not only public servants, but also their family members and children must declare their assets. If assets have inceased unlawfully, the law will be strictly enforced. This law applies not only to public representatives, but also to state employees and private sector workers. Legal frameworks have been established to prevent any opportunity for bribery and corruption,” the Minister said.

The event was attended by former Chairman of the Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha, Jayantha Rohana, along with former public representatives, state officials from the area, and a large number of local residents.
