The Qatar Charity Organization has arranged to provide free urea, TSP fertilizer and MOP fertilizer to 3476 farmers of low income families engaged in vegetable cultivation in Kurunegala, Matale and Monaragala districts.
This fertilizer stock was officially handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries recently. The program was chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, and the Minister of State for Livestock Development, Mr. D. B. Herath, Qatar Charity Sri Lanka Director Mr. Mohammad S. M. Abukhalif and Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Mr. Janaka Dharmakeerthi also participated in this event.
Qatar Charity Institute has taken this step considering the food security of our country and under this program, 1476 vegetable farmers in Kurunegala district, 1000 farmers in Matale district and 1000 farmers in Monaragala district will be given this fertilizer for vegetable cultivation free of charge.
Under this, arrangements have been made to provide a fertilizer bundle of 25 kg each of urea, TSP fertilizer and MOP fertilizer to one farmer.
The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, who participated in this event, expressed these views.
We have recently provided fertilizer subsidies for paddy, tea, coconut, cinnamon. But we have not been able to provide fertilizer subsidies to vegetable farmers. The reason for that is that the country’s financial situation is not good. But the Qatar Charity Organization is offering to give free fertilizers to vegetable farmers to a certain extent.
The money of the people of Qatar operates in this organization. The minister also said that our government would express its gratitude to the Qatar government and the Qatar Charity Institute for making such a contribution for the food security of our country.
