Trade, Commerce and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando announced in Parliament yesterday that 233.68 million eggs have been imported into Sri Lanka between 2023 and May 2024.

According to this, 168.5 million eggs have been imported into Sri Lanka in 2023 and 65.18 million eggs were imported till May 2024, the Minister said.

He added that daily egg consumption has also increased by three million recently.

The Minister also said that 3,120 million eggs including 2,047 million eggs in 2023 and 1,073 million eggs till last May 2024 have been produced in the country. The Minister said that due to the Covid pandemic and the economic crisis, almost half of the egg farms in the country were closed and due to the decline in egg production, eggs had to be imported.

The Minister said that the egg production in this country is gradually recovering and there is a strong demand for eggs from tourist hotels because the prices of fish and chicken have gone up.

He said this while giving answers to an oral question raised by Kurunegala District MP Sumith Udukumbura.
