I was deprived of becoming Prime Minister by SLPP – MP Wijeyadasa
Former Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister and Presidential candidate MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said that during the last Aragalaya time, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa requested him to take over the post of country’s Prime Minister.
He said this while speaking to the media after participating in an event that was held in Anuradhapura on Wednesday (7).
However, he said that a group of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party deprived him of that opportunity.
Speaking to the media MP Rajapakshe said,: “When there was a struggle (Aragalaya) going on in the country, in order to calm the country and build the nation, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa took a decision on May 12, 2022 and informed me to accept the position of the Prime Minister of the Government.
After getting to know about this news, a group of SLPP got worried and swiftly brought Ranil Wickremesinghe and put pressure on the former President”.
MP Rajapakshe said that due to the pressure that was put on former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa by this SLPP group, he was compelled to handover the Prime Minister position to Ranil Wickremesinghe. “The LTTE stood in the way of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s victory in the 2005 Presidential election. The people of the North were told not to vote for him by force.
“Even during the good governance government in 2015, even though the economic programme was strong, the economy collapsed again due to the Easter attack. The people of this country know how this country became bankrupt after that.
He saved the bankrupt country from bankruptcy again in a short period of two years. The opportunity has arisen to continue his programme for another five years. The people know how the current President has acted in the last two years. We know that no matter which candidate is nominated in this Presidential Election, President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be re-appointed as a courtesy to the people. His victory is certain.
A limited group of United National Party members has moved away from us.We are requesting them to join with us to bring this country to the right place, build a better future for the children and get development benefits,”.
