Construction of Railways workshop complex in Ratmalana begins

Laying of the foundation stone for the workshop complex in Ratmalana for repairing and upgrading new diesel power sets under the Railway Efficiency Improvement Project of the Railways Department, operative under the Transport and Highways Ministry, was carried out by Transport and Highways Ministry Secretary Ranjith Rubasinghe.

The main objective of this is to develop the existing facilities for carrying out other repairs of engines and coaches, focusing on new engines and carriages that are in operation under the Railways Department and are to be added in the future.

The new building complex proposed to be constructed includes the main repair factory building, auxiliary items, sheet metal work area, administrative section, diesel engine new parts warehouse, electrical and electronic section, painting booths, employee restrooms, generator rooms and many other facilities.

The Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation is carrying out the construction work with the loan assistance of the Asian Development Bank and the total contract value of the project is Rs. 2.7 billion.

Transport and Highways Ministry Secretary Ranjith Rubasinghe, Railways General Manager S. S. Mudalige, Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation General Manager Xu, Project Director Upali Mallikarachchi, Railways Deputy General Managers and a group of invitees attended this event.
