National People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake addressing a rally promoting Muslim brotherhood in Biyagama, Malwana stated yesterday (9) that none of the leaders who governed the country have created a nation where people live in harmony.

Dissanayake highlighted that after the end of the war in 2009, there was hope among the people for a country where Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities could live together in brotherhood. However, these expectations were never met. He emphasised that no leader wanted to build a country where people live in harmony; instead, they preferred a nation plagued by conflicts and spreading hatred among each other. He questioned whether people voted for President Chandrika because she stopped corruption and fraud or because she developed the country. He asserted that it was because of the bomb blast at the CMC election meeting. Mahinda Rajapaksa was chosen in 2005 because of the war, and in 2010, both Mahinda and Fonseka were candidates because of the war. Fonseka became a candidate as the army commander who ended the war, yet Mahinda Rajapaksa won the election. Dissanayake pointed out that Mahinda lacked slogans to uplift the economy, stop corruption, ensure democracy and build national unity.

He noted that from 2015, conflicts began again, with Muslims becoming the victims. Until 2010, it was the Tamil people who suffered. Subsequently, a systematic anti-Muslim sentiment was fostered, leading to attacks in places like Digana and Aluthgama after the war, he stated.
